Making Hay at last ....

STOP PRESS: After a 14-week wait, the first of our new furniture has finally arrived.

Yay!

We have stools and two of our dining chairs - pity we don't have a table to sit at yet.....

Expecting a new swivel armchair and sofa soon. It's a bit like having Christmas stretched out over several weeks, instead of the alternative feeling of having it all at once.

Where have the past six weeks gone?

We’ve been back in Chez Wayville that long: unpacking, building new routines or patterns in our new spaces and generally nesting.

The feature wallpaper wall has gone up – am thrilled with the results.

All while waiting for our new furniture. Emails from Cult Living this week say the kitchen stools and two of our dining chairs will be here next Tuesday/Wednesday. Yay.

I also got to test out the foam for our new sofa during the week during a visit to the upholsterers. Exciting

Meanwhile, Christine and I have looked at dozens of fabric samples to narrow down our choices for cushions for the bench seat and sofa. To be honest, Christine has done all the leg work or searching and I got to pick from her curated results.

This is what we’ve chosen.

#Week 23 – Moving day, back home at last

Only one week longer than the pre-start forecast and we have moved back in.

Matt, our star project supervisor, admitted I could have pushed him and moved in the weekend before. Instead, we chose that time to move everything but the essentials such as bed, fridge, TV, sofa, dining table – and toothbrush.

By moving day, the following Thursday, Des had completely set up the kitchen.

Thanks to Fit Bit, I apparently walked more than 18,000 steps that day.

We've been in a week and the novelty doesn't seem to be diminishing.  

I’m loving the extra space in the kitchen and the ensuite feels like I’m in a luxury hotel.

Am so glad it’s 2016 not 2006 with its drought conditions.

After two days, Des confessed he was loving “his” bathroom and the shower too.

The gas flame fire place, the ducted heating, the underfloor heating in the bathroom and the heated towel rail are bliss after the freezing conditions we’ve endured this winter while renting.

Last night I caught myself half out the bedroom door on the way to a 2am pee – before remembering there was an ensuite now. Old habits.

Quick thoughts:

o   A few mild winter days has meant we could open the sliding doors and they work so well. I love how they “frame” the lounge/dining and kitchen

o   I’m in love with the kitchen island – I’ve laid my arms out wide on it a few times

o   Our new “toy” is the remote control arm that moves the TV almost 180 degrees

o   My blue and white porcelain looks fabulous on the veneer shelves

o   The new internal layout totally works

o   The TV-media unit Christine designed and we had made by Gawler Custom Joinery is fabulous - especially my "door bling"

What's next?

Unfortunately, we have to wait quite a few more weeks for the new furniture, so it feels a tad still like we’re camping.

Apparently the dining table and chairs are due until October. Sigh. No entertaining until then. Can’t hang the pendant lights until the table is here.

I’m pining especially for the kitchen stools; then we’ll feel like we’re really using the kitchen as intended.

The track lighting for the kitchen arrived this week – that should be up next week, along with a feature wall of wallpaper – my first since my teenage bedroom. The wallpaper is a sentimental choice; it’s designed by Anna Spiro my second favourite interior designer after my sister Christine Rady. It's called Rosey Posey Trellis. Next arrivals hopefully will be the new L-shaped sofa, re-upholstered swivel armchair and footstool and the leather bench seat cushion – which should arrive well before its companion table.

I’ll post some of Christine’s fabric ideas for cushions and lamp shades next.

#Week 18 – A veneer to remember

Love. Love. Love.

I’ve been describing our dining-living feature wall “my wall of veneer” and it’s lived up to its name.

It’s also my new obsession.

The feature idea was Christine’s idea and it’s inspired. It totally works.

It gives purpose to our extremely long southern wall.

And provides oodles of display and storage space.

I love the bare wood shelving so much that I’m fantasising about NOT cluttering them with tonnes of knick knacks.

Time will tell.

Here is the new kitchen; as you can see we have a “wall” of white and a “wall” of grey.

I write “wall” because of course it’s really cupboards and drawers but the overall effect is an expanse of one colour.

The pantry is enormous. The doors slide back inside when open and the pantry is use. Otherwise, they provide an instant cover-up.

And finally the laundry. This picture doesn't do it justice. There's about three times more cupboards than you can see in this image.

#Week 17: Let’s get this (joinery) party started

Right now feels like the night before a big event, a special occasion.

From next Monday, the interior is going to take substantial shape as our joinery starts to be installed.

And there’s a lot of it. The entire kitchen, including the new, island; a whole of American Oak veneer with shelving plus the dining bench seat; the laundry with benchtop and storage; both bathroom vanity units.

Bummer then that I’m working in Melbourne most of the week.

What’s new?

Our new timber flooring in the entire back area including the kitchen.

We have gorgeous timber floors throughout the kitchen, dining, lounge. The floating engineered timber flooring was my choice and the stunning result is gratifying and equally a relief. It's Atacama from the Au Naturale range, described on the website as being made from European Oak. It's warm without being yellow and has black tool marks that pick up the black sliding doors. 

Tiling in the bathrooms is finished.

I'm in love with the main bathroom tiles.

Heated towel racks are in.

New cornices and skirting boards are helping to top and tail every room.

Downlights are in, while outdoor lights (Orsay from Instyle Lighting) have also been installed on the back verandah.

These will direct light above and below. 

Power has been restored. 

We have passage lights for the first time and I love what they do to that area – the Love Note white on the walls is sparkling.

What’s changed?

Two weeks ago, Christine decided we should scrap the Caravaggio pendants we had planned for the kitchen in favour of black track lighting. 

This image shows the look we’re going for. Unsettled at first, I’m totally with her on this.

The black track will complement the sliding doors.

We’ve also gone with these About a Stool stools from Danish furniture company Hay.

Really love these stools.

Week #13: Short St shop-a-thon

So while the tiling, flooring, first painting coats and final electrics are continuing at Short St, it’s time to turn our attention to furnishing these divine new spaces.

Yes, Christine and I have spent countless hours and Pinterest pins selecting – perhaps, fantasising – on the furniture and furnishings. Some of our choices are certainly more aspirational than practical and, let’s face it, affordable.

Now that it’s crunch time, we need to make choices and start ordering. While I try and buy local as much as I like, I refuse to feel guilty for heading to Melbourne for the wider choice available. Let’s face it – here in Adelaide, there’s local designers or there’s the chain store but not a lot in between.

Here’s some of the array of furniture we considered in our two days of intense interior shopping in Melbourne.

Week #3: Getting down and dirty, Muuto and a Scandi find

A slow start but by week’s end there was a lot of PVC.

First though, Matt our site supervisor sent me a photo of a digger inside our little house excavating for the re-routing the pipework.

It was a tad shocking to see such a large piece of equipment at work inside Chez Wayville. It was invasive but necessary.

It seems a slow start but all the plumbing has been done for the new bathrooms and laundry. Yay.

Meanwhile, Monsieur D and I came back to retrieve the fridge, TV, sofa and arm chair, beds and other assorted bits and pieces – like our pantry goods, kitchenware, laundry items – and moved into our new temporary home. They've been locked away behind one of those boarded up doors you can see in the image above.

For the next 20 or so weeks we’re living around the corner from Chez Wayville, which is incredibly handy and lucky. Between us this is our fourth address in Wayville, we’ve only ever moved about 300m-400m. Creatures of habitat.

We worked non-stop from 10am to 6pm even though we move the bare minimum. Dreading the move back.

Two steps forward one step back with our fittings choices this week. We’ve (that’s Christine and me) have settled on the kitchen pendants.

This will give a clue to the part of the kitchen colour-way.

Muuto Unfold Pendant in Grey

Muuto is a Scandanavian design company and we have liked a few of their designs, particularly an oak dining table.  The Unfold Pendant is actually made of rubber! However a stockist in Sydney put us off Muuto's furniture after telling Christine they'd had a lot returns; wooden furniture routinely arrived chipped. That's triggered a rethink, except for these lights. This pic from Surrounding, an Australian design website, shows them in use:

Christine also found some ideal pendants to hang over the dining area. They're Danish by the design outfit Frandsen. Apparently they're sold out. Fingers-crossed she can negotiate a re-supply. I love them.

Week #2: Shock and awe plus 6cm worth of trouble with Australia Post

So everything but the bedrooms, study and entrance hall has been gutted.

Even though you know what’s coming , it’s still a surprise to see your interior completely exfoliated.

By week’s end new pipework for the ensuite has gone in, and a trench dug in the kitchen to relocate its wet area. An alternate plan has also been found to resolve a nasty sewerage issue that emerged just days before our start date.  It won’t be any cheaper but will involve less disruptive work.

Kitchen and former laundry gone.

Chez Wayville dates to 1920 and we still had some original earthenware pipes apparently. These have to be replaced with PVC. Instead of having to pull down fences and excavate externally, disrupting the neighbour’s build, they’ll now be replaced under the original slab. The new main bathroom and laundry pipework will be connected to the PVC put in when the previous owners built our extension in the 1990s.

A pipe specialist with a camera on the end of a probe was brought in to trace the pipe network. Wish I’d been there to see that.

So, we’re slightly behind after two weeks; footings should have been laid for the new bathrooms and laundry but I’m told they’ll be a cracking pace this coming week.

Meanwhile, this stunning mirror for the main bathroom is languishing in an Australia Post mail centre in Portland, Oregon. All because of 6cm.

The Ojai mirror was found by my sister Christine on a US homewares website Serena & Lily. It’s absolutely perfect for the new main bathroom. And it was a reasonable price. Unfortunately they didn’t ship to Australia.

So I decided to give Australia Post’s new US postal service ShopMate a go.

It’s free to register and you get a US address. I previously belonged to myus.com – wish I hadn’t cancelled my subscription now.

It’s a mirror – it’s not a table or sofa or something large, I never dreamed there would be an issue. It’s under Australia Post’s ShopMate weight limit by 2kg (including the extra weight from the packaging) but apparently it exceeds the length limit of 105cm by 6cm.

Australia Post’s options are: throw it away and charge me $5; I arrange return to sender (as in online seller) and charge me $5; or I make alternative arrangements. The latter is what I’m attempting to do. FedEx quoted me $950. I said no thank you. I’ll update next week how the freight fiasco is going.

Meanwhile, a second attempt at using ShopMate worked for these cute handles for the main bathroom vanity.

They’re from another US retailer Hickory Hardware. They only cost $27 to ship to Australia. Maybe I was a bit harsh when I filled out the Australia Post customer service survey based on my mirror experience.

Postscript: Christine tells me she's ordered these door handles for the vanity as well - and she's still waiting for them to arrive.

They have to be dipped to match the bamboo draw handles. I'm thinking tybuy.com is starting to sound like a bit of a dodgy site. Hope not because they are gorgeous.
